Open source is a term used online for software that has its code freely available, with modification, redistribution, and contribution potentially available for each piece of software. This is all thankfully possible simply because there is no cost to reproducing code. This in itself achieves a post-scarcity reality for the digital world, contributors can engage with the software and improve upon it for the betterment of all people.
In the current age technology has far exceeded what we desired from it many decades ago, and there are no signs of stopping. We have developed gene-editing to create more food, prefabricated housing to house everybody comfortably and efficiently. Plumbing alone has granted us a luxury where we are able to easily access clean water and dispose of waste.
And so with all of this innovation, should we not look towards a society where open source is not just a term for software, but also for hardware, infrastructure, and governance? A civilisation where we all can contribute towards the betterment of everybody on Earth? A world where we can achieve post-scarcity and experience the plurality of utopia - a forever evolving ecosystem of ideas and innovations.
A major barrier in the road for scientific innovation and discovery comes from the oppressive nature of demanding that science is profitable. If we did not have this barrier scientists would have the ability to improve the lives of everything for the cost of very little usage of resources.
Unfortunately, the nature of this society has a steep starting step where we will have to build up how we organise such a society because we will have to get a lot of experts to decide what the best way to organise a society is while we develop methods towards post-scarcity. Another big step will be when we have to redevelop how we organise the society once we achieve true post-scarcity without collapsing the entire system. A lot of this will depend on our brightest minds making sure we get it right the first time.
I see this system mixes geniocracy and democracy together by enabling the smartest people of our world to boost humanity forwards, but the general population being able to contribute on the same platform these people work on, practically a nearly flat hierarchy of contributors ranging from the best of the best to the casual hobbyist. Everybody is involved - everybody is allowed to contribute and advance our understanding of the universe and advance our lives collectively.
